Weekly Snapshot: Insecurities
Insecurities: we all have them. It’s a reality unlike any other.
I used to think I was prone to insecurities, but recently, I’ve been observing several actions that have compelled me to accept the opposite as true. I thought hard about the origin of my insecurities, and after giving it a thought, I traced the roots back to my formative childhood and adulthood events - be they familial or social.
I guess insecurities are a result of longing. Something that you wanted but haven’t quite achieved it yet. It is an idea of what fulfillment feels like. The absence of fulfillment to a level of excess causes our insecurities.
In the digital age, our insecurities have taken center stage. We are insecure about our looks, about our status, about our relationships, about our ability to control, and about almost everything that we long for. The fulfillment of our longing is a long and arduous process that we all strive to achieve. We often try to cover our dark spots with makeup and our lack of income with an excuse. We inflate our situation to fit in. And whenever we find ourselves doing it, that’s our insecurity - center stage.
Just like overcoming grief has five stages, overcoming your insecurity has only three (at least, that’s what I’ve gotten so far). The first stage is acceptance. If you don’t feel it is a problem, then there is no problem in your reality. But calling a spade a spade is always a good starting point. The second stage is understanding. If you don’t understand, you can’t solutionize. Diving deeper into the root cause and fairly analyzing your situation will result in a solid understanding of your insecurity. Once you understand where it stems from, you can formulate a plan to eliminate it. The third stage is remedy. Try experimenting with different strategies to control the urge to react when your insecurity springs up. I’m using the “it’s okay” to impulse control and then consciously altering my response based on rationality, not emotions. So far, it has helped reduce the altercations. Additionally, it has helped me work on resolving the root of my insecurity.
It’s tough, and I know how awful they make us feel from the inside. But living in fear of our insecurities is giving into them, so all I can say is that draw out the courage to face your insecurities head-on. You won’t eliminate them, but at least you’ll alleviate the pain.
