Weekly Snapshot: Diamonds in the Rough
Diamonds have an inspiring origin story. After enduring billions of years of intense heat and pressure, diamonds embody the remarkable resilience needed to transform adversity into value. When we first mine a diamond, it appears as a rough, uncut stone that does not yet exhibit the sparkle and beauty it is known for. Polishing and refining it reveals its true beauty and value.
I find humans to be similar.
We have the potential and characteristics to become a diamond if we are harnessed and developed. Our brain evolves with new experiences and learning, and this ability to learn and adapt to new information makes us formidable learning machines - the secret to our success as a species.
We need to realize that we are still diamonds in the rough.
We have not peaked. Regardless of our age, there's always something to learn and discover. This internal hunger for growth helps us break our ceiling and enable us to achieve new heights.
The moment we believe we are a polished and refined diamond is when we start lying to ourselves. The moment we believe our stories or experiences to be absolute is the moment we cease to grow. The moment we find our truth to be the ultimate truth is when we fail to uncover something new. The moment we assume that we have seen it all is the moment we go blind.
We must avoid these moments at all costs. We must live on this earth like a newborn - curious, adaptable, flexible, non-judgmental, and most importantly, quick absorbers of information. Adapting to our newborn persona is the only way we will grow and refine ourselves.
Who knows that a day might arrive when we become the diamond we always hoped to become?
But not today.
